The Anatomy of a Bouquet

When working on a proposal for our clients we always start with the bridal bouquet, and with good reason. The bridal bouquet is like a synopsis of the entire story that is your wedding flowers, bound together with gorgeous ribbon. I like to break it down sometimes and call it the Anatomy of a Bouquet.

When choosing the flowers for the bouquet (i.e. the entire wedding) it’s always important to pick blooms and foliage that satisfy all the categories of flowers as seen below.

Elements of a Bouquet

Steps in Choosing Your Blooms & Foliage

Step 1: Choose your focal flowers. I usually start with roses, as they tend to be the core of most of my bouquets. Other focal flowers could be peonies, anthuriums, reflexed tulips etc.

Step 2: Choose your line flowers next. I’m always looking for that perfect line flower that has a sense of movement. Think dogwood branches, fritallarria, astilbe and trailing greenery like jasmine and ruscus.

Step 3: Next I choose my foliage; now, you need to know I’m a HUGE geek when it comes to foliages and textures. they can sometimes completely drive my design.

Step 4: The last step for me is the filler flowers, or SPRINKLES, as I like to call them. To me this is where the magic an happen, along with the line flowers, these flowers are usually more delicate and dainty and just create that pixie dust that we all like to give our bouquets.

We hope this gives you some inspiration to get busy designing! And remember, #youdesignwepropose.
